Innovation for Irish Aquaculture: Short Video Interviews – Part 3

IATiP is delighted to have had such a positive response to the sharing of knowledge with the Irish Aquaculture community virtually. As you know, we took on this approach as a result of the IATiP conference being cancelled last April (due to the pandemic), and since then our expert speakers are kindly sparing their time to keep us up-to-date on their exciting technologies and innovation.

Each week, we hope to cover various sectors and topics related to Irish Aquaculture. In Part 1, we touched on the broad topic of fish health and in Part 2 we looked at seaweeds. This week, we are focusing on genetics and would like to showcase two further interviews.

First, we would like to introduce you to Dr Luca Mirimin, Lecturer at GMIT. A regular on the Irish aquaculture scene, Luca is a specialist in the application of genetic techniques to manage and conserve aquatic organisms. In this interview, Luca describes how he is able to use these techniques to detect viable bivalve and crustacea larvae in plankton, which can imply seed recruitment and spawning events. This application can be used to complement monitoring systems to inform management decisions.  To find out more, watch the video, by clicking here.

And the second showcase interview is that held with Dr Borghild Hillestad, Genetic Manager at Benchmark Genetics Norway. Borghild speaks to us about their innovative breeding programme which uses genetic biomarkers to increase robustness and growth of Atlantic salmon; where ‘biomarkers’ a naturally occurring molecule, gene, or characteristic by which a particular pathological or physiological process, disease, etc. can be identified. To support this work, they have begun using medical “CT” (computerised tomography) scanners to assess the quality traits of the fish in the breeding programme (e.g. size, fat distribution). These machines provide more accurate data when scanning the fish than traditional manual dissection and measurement.  To find out more, watch the video, by clicking here.
